Incident Description:
On April 24, 2023, Breaking Latest News reported a fire at a biomass plant in Hagen, Germany.
The fire ignited in one of the two silo towers containing 2,000 tons of waste wood, which serves as fuel for the bio power plant. It prompted the deployment of numerous emergency services at the plant site in Hagen.
Despite initial attempts to extinguish the fire with nitrogen, heavy smoke development and the risk of spontaneous combustion led the fire brigade to open the silo and empty it with an excavator, which unfortunately provided more oxygen to fuel the fire.
The smoke spread beyond the city limits of Hagen to nearby Dortmund and Schwerte, prompting the fire brigade to issue a warning for residents to close their windows and doors as a precaution and to switch off air conditioning and ventilation systems.
No injuries were reported.
