Description of Sulfur Dust Fire:
On April 4, 2018, the Carlsbad Current Argus reported a sulfur fire at a chemical company in Artesia, New Mexico. The fire, which broke out at around 4:30 p.m., forced police and emergency crews to close U.S. Highway 285 at Mill Road and evacuate the company building.
One person was treated for smoke inhalation, but no other injuries were reported. According to the Eddy County emergency manager, the fire was put out around 5 p.m. and U.S. Highway 285 was reopened to traffic shortly after.
