According to its website, the San Francisco Southeast Treatment plant is the city’s oldest wastewater treatment facility. It was built in 1952 and treats nearly 80% of the city’s flow, amounting to a daily total of 57 million gallons of wastewater and 160 wet tons of biosolids. During a rainstorm, it has the capacity to treat up to 250 million gallons of wastewater.
Incident Description:
On June 8, 2021, the San Francisco Chronicle reported a fire at a wastewater treatment plant in San Francisco.
Dried sludge caught fire during a demolition at the plant at around 2:00 p.m. The resulting one-alarm fire spewed black smoke in the vicinity of the plant, which was undergoing construction for odour control and structural and seismic retrofits.
No injuries were reported.
