According to its website, Mr. Chips Inc. is a subsidiary of Bay View Foods located in Pinconning, Michigan. It was founded in 2000 and processes and packages pickle, pepper and relish products in a facility sitting on 10 acres of land.
Incident Description:
On October 4, 2020, MLive reported a fire at a pickle, pepper and relish products facility in Pinconning, Michigan.
The fire ignited shortly after 3:15 p.m. Arriving firefighters found smoke and flames in the back of the facility, by the loading dock. The size of the building and its steel roof made suppression efforts difficult. An issue also arose with the water supply, as the 400,000 gallons of water used on the flames taxed the local supply. It took approximately 15 hours to extinguish the fire.
The presence of vinegar and plastics for packaging created an air quality issue. Some nearby residents were evacuated for approximately two hours due to deteriorating air quality, which was being checked by a hazardous materials tactical team.
One firefighter was treated for a medical issue during a rehabilitation period, but no other injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation.
