Incident Description:
On September 7, 2021, Heute reported a silo explosion at a herbal feed additive manufacturer in Engerwitzdorf, Austria.
The explosion occurred at around 2:10 p.m. while a worker was filling the silos with powder. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Using hand fire extinguishers, other employees were able to put out a small fire caused by the explosion, but five fire brigades were fully engaged for several hours because a glowing nest was believed to be in the overheated silo. Extinguishing water had penetrated the storage tank, so it had to be checked and cleaned. The Kefermarkt and Schweinbach fire brigades did not move in until 11:15 p.m.
One of the silos is believed to have overheated.
