Incident Description:
On January 6, 2023, Malta Today reported a fire at a grain terminal in Paola, Malta.
According to the company, the fire happened after grain started to ferment, creating high temperatures in a silo. It ignited at around 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday and the removal operation took 24 hours.
The incident resulted in the loss of 1,000 tons of alfalfa grain, but 300 tons kept in a separate silo were spared.
A company manager explained that the Russian invasion of Ukraine has forced the terminal to store grain for one of its clients for longer periods than expected. He said this increased the risk of fermentation. Moreover, he reported that the terminal is equipped with surveillance systems for continuously monitoring temperature and emitted gasses.
No injuries were reported.
