Incident Description:
On June 15, 2023, G1 Globo reported a grain dryer fire at a soy sauce production facility in Vera, Brazil.
The fire department reported that most of the corn inside the grain dryer was either engulfed in flames or surrounded by fire. Firefighters devised a plan to gradually remove all the corn from the dryer. Their strategy involved cooling the complex’s structure to reach the upper loading funnel at the top of the drying tower, from where they could establish a firefighting operation.
To avoid water spreading throughout the dryer, which could affect the distribution of beans within the drying chamber, firefighters refrained from pouring water through the loading hopper. Although they successfully brought the flames under control, teams remained on site for 12 hours to prevent reactivations.
Two fire trucks, a pickup truck, and eight military personnel were deployed to the scene. The farm also provided support by supplying machinery, water trucks, and additional employees. Altogether, over 150,000 litres of water were utilized during the firefighting efforts.
No injuries were reported, but over 80 tons of corn were destroyed.
