Incident Description:
On August 9, 2018, the Newport Daily Express reported a fire in the pellet building of a grain company in Newport, Vermont. By the time fire crews arrived at around 8:16 a.m., smoke was visible from the Newport City Municipal Building a distance away.
One firefighter told the local press that there was a lot of smoke coming out of the pellet building and the vent stack leading to the dryer unit. The team inserted a hose and found a small fire inside the dryer. At that point it was, as one crew member stated, “very hot and still smoky and steamy.”
After extinguishing the fire using water from the lake, firefighters put an aerial ladder to the roof to ensure there were no fire extensions.
No injuries were reported and although the cause of the fire was undermined, officials did not treat it as suspicious.
