Incident Description:
On September 15, 2021, the Daily News reported a grain bin fire at an animal nutrition facility in Strykersville, New York.
Eight fire companies were called to the facility after a fire was reported just after 7:00 a.m. and found fire in a 300-ton grain bin containing 80 tons of gluten. They used more than 85,000 gallons of water to break down and cool the gluten as well as flush out the bin.
According to Wyoming County Emergency Services, the gluten combusted because of high moisture levels inside the bin.
All the grain was lost and the bin was damaged. A loss of $60,000 was estimated, but normal operations resumed at the plant.
No injuries were reported.
