Incident Description:
On September 23, 2021, The Courier reported a fire at a grain processing facility in Narrabri, Australia.
Narrabri Fire & Rescue responded to reports of a building fire at 4:17 a.m., after a security officer patrolling the site saw flames and called them in. When firefighters arrived at the scene, onsite staff informed them that sparks had been caused by a mechanical fault with a conveyor.
Fire then spread to a large open ventilated bulk storage silo, approximately 40 metres by 100 metres in diameter, with more than 1000 tons of cotton hull product. Several open areas on-site were used to extinguish the burning product due to concerns about possible dust explosions. The following morning, fire crews were recalled to the site after the removed product reignited due to strong winds.
The plant itself was not damaged, but some products were destroyed. No injuries were reported.
