Incident Description:
On December 27, 2018, the Dubois County Herald reported a smouldering silage fire at a farm in Loogootee, Indiana.
The farmer was unloading silage from a concrete bin to feed cattle when he discovered the situation.
Arriving firefighters found dry silage smoking inside a concrete bin. The chief of the Haysville Volunteer Fire Department said that an electrical problem may have started the smouldering. An electric cord running through the silo interior was thought to have shorted and sparked.
The fire crews climbed up to an access door that had burned and sprayed water on the smouldering silage before removing it.
The fire chief said that the farmer will need to check the silo’s electric system and replace a feeder belt that had melted. Otherwise, there was no property damage.
There were no injuries.
