Incident Description:
On June 1, 2023, Il Giorno reported a silo fire at a sawmill in Vergiate, Italy.
The alarm went off around 2:00 p.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene with three vehicles: the fire engine from the Ispra detachment, tank trucks, and ladder trucks from the Varese provincial command.
During the intervention, firefighters had to flood the silo with water in order to dampen the material and prevent the fire from spreading. There were concerns that the fire might impact rail traffic, given the proximity of the sawmill to the Milan-Domodossola line.
Fortunately, there were no disruptions to train services. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation. No injuries were reported.
