Incident Description:
On May 11, 2023, NÖN.at reported a fire at an agricultural facility in Ziersdorf, Austria.
A vigilant citizen noticed a suspicious burning smell around midnight. After an extensive search, employees discovered smoke emanating from a grain silo.
The Ziersdorf volunteer fire brigade arrived at the scene within minutes. However, due to the height of the building and obstructions, pinpointing the exact source of the fire within the extensive company premises proved challenging, so additional fire brigades were alerted, including the turntable ladder from Hollabrunn.
To combat the fire inside the mill, two squads equipped with SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) were deployed. The first two respiratory protection teams from FF Ziersdorf encountered difficulties advancing in the upper area of the silo due to limited visibility. After several unsuccessful attempts to extinguish the interior, the attack had to be canceled due to the intense heat.
To gain further clarity on the affected areas, a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera was deployed. The fire was then tackled and extinguished from the outside using the Hollabrunn turntable ladder.
No injuries were reported. The fire predominantly impacted a grain conveyor system and the roof area. The police are currently investigating the exact cause.
