Company Description:
According to its website, Corson Grain is a family-owned and operated agribusiness with a presence in Gisborne, New Zealand and Warwick, Australia. The Gisborne location employs 11 workers and processes grain for products such as cereal and animal feed.
It was established over 100 years ago and developed the first hybrid maize seed evaluations, followed by the country’s first food grade maize milling plant in the 1970’s. In 2003 the company purchased a large milling operation in Queensland which catapulted it into the largest maize milling company in Australia.
Incident Description:
On March 3, 2023, the Independent Journal Review reported a fire at an agribusiness in Gisborne, New Zealand.
According to 1 News, seven fire trucks were called to the “well-involved” fire at around 7.01 p.m. One witness reported that she “noticed a big plume of smoke” coming from the grain silos from her home across the road and called the fire department.
The milling section of the granary was destroyed before the fire was contained. The Fire and Emergency senior station officer said that an investigator was being called in to confirm that the incident was not suspicious.
No injuries were reported.
