Incident Description:
On June 7, 2022, Aachener-Nachrichten reported a grain elevator fire at a facility in Nörvenich, Germany.
At around 2:10 p.m. on June 3, the fire department received an emergency call about a deflagration and fire in the silo facility. Several people tried to put out the fire on site, but were unable to get it under control.
Firefighters determined that the actual location of the fire was on the eighth floor of the grain warehouse. After the deflagration, a fire had spread through the pipework and filter system of the silo.
It took around two and a half hours for the fire, which had spread over several floors, to be extinguished. More than 70 emergency services from the fire brigade, rescue services, and police were present. In addition, thermal cameras were used to examine the silo for other possible embers.
The police are now investigating the cause of the fire. They stated that welding work was an ignition source. At the moment, the extent of the damage cannot be quantified precisely, but an initial estimate by the police indicates that it is in the five-digit range.
A firefighter was hit by a car driver while maneuvering in order to set up the water supply and suffered minor injuries, which led to further treatment in a hospital as a precaution. The driver initially fled the scene but a suspect has now been found, and the investigation is ongoing.
