Incident Description:
On March 22, 2022, the Gephardt Daily reported a fire at a public high school in Spanish Fork, Utah.
Fire crews were dispatched about 1:45 p.m. after smoke was observed coming from the dust collector unit attached to the school wood shop. While the fire was contained in the dust collector, smoke spread through the northern parts of the school.
Police and fire crews from Salem, Mapleton, and the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office assisted the Spanish Fork Fire and EMS Department. Firefighters extinguished the blaze within 32 minutes of arriving at the school, according to a press release.
According to investigators, the fire was caused by a welder repairing the dust collector. During the repair, material inside the dust collector ignited.
One firefighter was treated for burns at a local hospital and later released. School officials said no students were affected by the smoke.
Damage was estimated at $50,000.
