Description of Wood Dust Explosion:
On July 27, 2018, Powder & Bulk Solids reported a fire at a log furniture manufacturer and retail store in Lancaster, Kentucky. According to fire department officials, the blaze started at around 6:30 a.m. in a dust collection area in the plant’s “flat shop”. Flames then progressed into a nearby shipping area.
Firefighters from several counties battled the blaze which, according to the WKYT news agency, forced the closure of the road where the business was located. By the time it was brought under control three buildings were “lost,” as one of the employees stated.
The business owner told the Advocate-Messenger that an explosion occurred when an employee turned on a piece of equipment in the flat shop where tables and dresser drawers were constructed, sending a fireball hurtling through a door vent. All workers on the premises at the time were evacuated, and there were no injuries reported.
