Incident Description:
On February 14, 2022, the Index-Journal reported a fire at a skylight and roof window manufacturer in Greenwood, South Carolina.
Firefighters were on scene at about 1:30 p.m. According to the Greenwood County Fire Chief, the fire began when something sparked in the exhaust system of the plant’s sawdust collector, igniting sawdust stored in a trailer.
After staff moved the trailer out from under a dust collection silo, firefighters first focused on the silo itself. The silo still contained smoke, which vented into the building, so they flushed it and put out any fire that may have been inside.
Initially, firefighters could not unload the sawdust that had ignited inside the trailer, so they had to cut holes in the trailer’s roof and spray water onto the sawdust. Eventually, the weight of the water caused the trailer to collapse, allowing firefighters to spray water directly onto the exposed sawdust, putting out the fire.
No one was injured, and no property damage was apparent.
