Incident Description:
On December 6, 2021, Ver-O-Fato reported an explosion at a calcium carbonate mine in Barcarena, Brazil.
The explosion, which occurred at around 8:30 a.m., was followed by a fire that sent a column of toxic smoke in the atmosphere, covering several local communities. The fire released sodium hydrosulfite. According to DOL, at around 10:00 p.m., it had been contained, but the dense white smoke was still evident.
No injuries were reported, but residents were advised to wear masks and stay indoors.
