Incident Description:
On August 2, 2021, the CBC reported a fire at a lumber mill in Chester Basin, Nova Scotia.
The Chester Basin Volunteer Fire Department was called to the site just before 1:00 p.m. Crews arrived to find the main building completely engulfed in flames, so they took a defensive stance to prevent the fire from spreading. They were joined by 11 other departments from the surrounding areas, and in total around 70 personnel battled the fire until 7:00 p.m.
While the rain kept the sawdust wet, preventing the fire from spreading, the main mill building suffered the most damage. Fortunately, some of the machinery was saved, so some work could continue, but the mill itself was destroyed.
The cause of the fire is unknown. No injuries were reported.
Previous Incidents:
The CBC reported that the lumber mill experienced another fire approximately 15 years ago and was able to rebuild.
