Incident Description:
On March 17, 2023, Sud Ouest reported a smouldering fire at a paper factory in Mimizan, France.
The fire developed on the paper mill’s main shavings pile. Six firefighters from Mimizan spent nearly a week taking turns watering the pile while mechanical shovels stirred and moved the shavings.
According to the firefighters, the operation may continue for another two to three days due to the type of combustion involved. They said that a natural phenomenon of auto-combustion was responsible for starting the fire.
No injuries were reported.
