Incident Description:
On April 20, 2021, WBAL TV reported a fire at a sugar products manufacturer in Baltimore, Maryland.
Firefighters responded shortly after 3:00 p.m. They found heavy fire and smoke issuing through the roof of a raw sugar shed. Once they got inside, they found that fire from a collapsed silo had gotten onto a conveyor belt and travelled midway through the building. Firefighters promptly evacuated and officials called for three alarms.
All employees were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Previous Incidents
On April 22, 2021, WBAL TV reported that in 2007, sugar dust caused an explosion that injured three employees and destroyed equipment. The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Administration later fined the company $4,000 for allowing the dust to accumulate.
