Description of Wood Dust Fire:
On January 8, 2018 the Reading Eagle reported a fire at a power plant in Reading, Pennsylvania. It broke out in the silo, where wood materials are stored before being burned.
Crews were called to the scene about 9:40 p.m, and remained until nearly 6:30 in the morning. Three firefighters returned later to assist plant workers who were using a front-end loader to scoop out the silo contents so that any hot spots could be hosed down.
No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
According to the Reading Eagle, on March 7, 2017 the Evergreen Community Power plant experienced another fire. This one was caused by a malfunction on the 1000-foot-long conveyor belt that carries the wood products, creating enough heat to ignite the wood, which was then dumped into the wood storage silo. The result was a “deep-seated fire” that required crews to spray water into the silo. Fire crews were at the scene for a few days until the fire was declared out.
