According to its website, North Dakota Mill and Elevator is the largest flour mill in the United States. Located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, it is also the only state-owned milling facility in the country. The mill commenced operations in October 1922 and now consists of eight milling units, a terminal elevator and a packing warehouse to prepare bagged products for shipment.
Incident Description:
On April 20, 2021, Knox Radio reported a fire at a mill and grain elevator in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The Grand Forks Fire Department responded when an alarm sounded at 8:00 p.m. When firefighters arrived, facility personnel reported smoke on the top floor of the K mill on the southeast corner of the property. When they investigated, they found that an automatic sprinkler system extinguished the flames, which originated in a piece of equipment.
Damages are estimated at around $10,000. No one was injured. A preliminary investigation suggested that the fire was due to a mechanical failure.
