According to its website, Hoshine Silicon is a silicon metal manufacturing company headquartered in Cixi City, Zhejiang Province, China. It was founded in 2005 and advertises itself as “the largest silicon metal producer in the world with its own coal and thermoelectricity.” In 2019, the company’s silicon metal output reached 560,000 metric tons, accounting for around 26% of the Chinese market and almost 17% of the global supply.
Incident Description:
On June 9, 2021, PV Magazine reported an explosion and fire at a silicon packaging company in Xinjiang, China.
The fire broke out at the facility at around noon on June 8. The company later confirmed that it occurred at a unit that had a trial production line under operation.
It took five firefighting units over 10 hours to get it under control. Nearby businesses evacuated non-essential staff around half an hour after the fire started and several nearby blocks were sealed off by traffic control personnel.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
