Description
One worker was killed and eleven injured in a reported resin dust explosion at Arakawa Chemical Industries Ltd. in Fuji, Japan. The facility produces chemicals for the paper industry and ink resins. Although residents were initially evacuated within 100 meters of the facility, they were later allowed back into their homes as no risk to the environment and those living near the plant was reported.
The facility layout is such that resin processing occurs on the third and fourth floors, crushing occurs on the second floor, and packaging occurs on ground level. News articles reported the ignition occurred near the crushing and packaging areas and that the most severely injured workers were in these areas. Workers on the fourth floor received minor injuries compared to other areas in the plant.
