Incident Description:
On September 6, 2021, Patch reported a magnesium fire at a packing plant in Dundalk, Maryland.
Fire crews were dispatched at 10:04 p.m. They found a 20-foot circle of debris on fire outside the plant. When they attempted to extinguish it with water, the debris ignited, indicating that it contained magnesium powder. Water cannot extinguish a magnesium fire.
A hazmat assignment was requested by fire commanders. A dump truck was dispatched to the fire site and the fire was extinguished once sand was dumped on it. The fire was under control at about 11:20 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
