Company Description:
According to the company website, Bhilai Steel Plant is India’s first and primary producer of steel rails, wide steel plates and other steel products. It was founded in 1955 and is an eleven-time winner of the Prime Minister’s Trophy for the best integrated steel plant in the country. Bhilai Steel Plant has been the flagship integrated steel plant unit of the Public Sector steel company, the Steel Authority of India Limited and is its largest and most profitable production facility.
Incident Description:
On May 18, 2019, Dainik Bhaskar reported a fire at a limestone mine in Bhilai, India.
At around 5:00 a.m., mine workers noticed that some conveyor belts were burning. After one caught fire, three more ignited. In total, four conveyor belts supplying coal in battery-11 and blast furnace-8 of the coke oven were damaged. Estimated financial loss is one crore ($7,500 US).
Plant production was not affected. No injuries were reported.
