Company Description:
According to the company website, the Roseridge Waste Management Services Commission was established in 2001 to operate the Roseridge Regional Landfill Site. It consists of six municipalities – Sturgeon County, Redwater, Legal, Gibbons, Morinville and Bon Accord. The landfill has been in operation since 1980 and receives approximately 70,000 tons of municipal solid waste annually.
Incident Description:
On October 22, 2018, the St. Albert Gazette reported a fire at a landfill in Sturgeon County, Alberta. When firefighters arrived in response to reports of 20-foot flames at the site, they found a 20-by-30-foot section of landfill waste on fire.
The landfill manager said that the fire started in a section reserved for fabric fluff from a tire recycling plant. He pointed out that tire material has a high likelihood of combustion because it tends to be hot when it comes out of the shredder.
The fire was under control within 15 minutes, though the Sturgeon County fire chief said that it briefly reignited the following Monday. The landfill manager asked people not to smoke at the site and to let their burn barrels cool for several weeks before hauling them to the facility.
No injuries were reported.
