Incident Description:
On August 3, 2018, the Belleville News-Democrat reported a huge fire at an old grain silo outside Troy, Illinois. The Troy Fire Protection District Assistant Chief said that a passerby is believed to have spotted the fire around 7:00 p.m. and called it in.
By the time fire crews arrived, the upper half of the 30-foot building was ablaze, with some flames shooting 20 feet in the air. The fire was close to the side of the silo where grain was once loaded onto trucks. It took firefighters about half an hour to put the fire out but they spent awhile on the scene afterwards, getting the hot spots and making sure the flames didn’t rekindle.
The grain silo was over 100 years old but had been out of service for many years. A grain and feed store occupies a separate building on the same property.
No one was on the premises at the time the fire broke out, and there were no injuries reported. The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office was called to investigate the cause but officials said they did not suspect foul play.
