Incident Description:
On July 24, 2022, the Sun-Gazette reported a grain silo explosion at a farm near Antes Fort, Pennsylvania.
The afternoon explosion sent sections of the top of the structure flying through the air. Tiadaghton Valley Regional police and more than half a dozen volunteer fire companies rushed to the scene about 1:15 p.m. They found the top of the silo missing and light smoke issuing from it.
Firefighters worked for more than two hours to douse the fire, which had been contained to the silo, which was only a third full of grain.
To reach the top of the silo, two aerial ladders were used, one from Jersey Shore and the other from Avis. A firefighter who had been working on the top of the extended Avis ladder truck for several minutes suddenly became overcome by heat and was unable to descend. A second firefighter immediately went to him as the ladder was quickly lowered to the ground. According to officials, he was treated at the scene.
Several tankers shuttled water to the scene from a fire hydrant at Front and Smith streets in Jersey Shore. Several cases of water and other refreshments were brought to the scene as the temperature approached 100 degrees. A small tent was set up in a nearby field so that exhausted firefighters could rest.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
