Incident Description:
On October 18, 2019, the Des Moines Register reported a grain bin fire at a farm in Palmyra Township, Iowa.
The incident, which occurred at around 6:30 a.m. on October 15, sent flames shooting 70 feet into the air. When fire crews arrived after being alerted by a neighbor, they concluded that the fire started in the batch dryer at the top of the grain bin.
According to the Hartford Fire Chief, it likely happened when the dryer fell into the bottom portion of the bin, setting the grain on fire. The burning corn then weakened the steel roof structure, causing the top to fall.
The bin held more than 1,000 bushels of corn in the top portion and between 5,000 to 8,000 in the bottom.
No injuries were reported.
