Incident Description:
On January 13, 2019, the Marshall Independent reported a fire at a grain storage facility in Walnut Grove, Minnesota.
Fire departments from several counties responded to the fire, which occurred in a conveyor system underneath a 500-foot grain building. A Walnut Grove Fire Department representative said that the location made it challenging to put out: firefighters had limited access to the tunnel and there were five million bushels of grain being stored in the building itself.
They ended up flooding the tunnel to extinguish the fire. The Headlight Herald reported that the tunnel was 600 feet long and open at both ends.
The high volume of smoke given off by the fire required law enforcement to control traffic on the nearby U.S. Highway 14.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
