Incident Description:
On October 6, 2023, KIWA Radio reported a fire at an agricultural facility in Hartley, Iowa.
According to the Assistant Fire Chief, a call came in at approximately 2:00 p.m. Upon their arrival at the scene, the fire department observed the combine engulfed in flames. The fire originated at the rear of the combine, and due to the presence of dust and chaff, it quickly spread to ignite the surrounding bean stubble. Fortunately, their prompt response allowed them to contain the fire to the already harvested area.
The Assistant Chief also noted that there were no reported injuries and speculated that the fire likely started due to combustible dust around the exhaust pipe.
The combine sustained irreparable damage, but there was no harm to the crops. The firefighting team remained at the scene for approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
