Incident Description:
On December 2, 2020, 660 News reported an explosion and fire at an agricultural co-op in Calgary, Alberta.
Firefighters were called out to the plant at around 4:00 p.m., after staff reported a grain dust explosion and small fire in the basement of the building. Embers had migrated through the grain handling system into a hopper on the upper levels of the building, resulting in a lot of smoke.
Calgary Fire worked with EMS to set up a staging area to contain the incident. A ladder was used as an elevated stand pipe to pour water into the hopper.
All employees and plant staff were able to safely evacuate, but one firefighter was injured. Paramedics treated them on-scene and then rushed them to hospital.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
