According to the company website, Star of the West Milling Company dates back to 1847-8, when it was founded by two brothers to serve the needs of the people in and around Frankenmuth, Michigan. It has since expanded from one mill to five flour mills in four different states and nine country elevators handling corn and soybeans. Its daily flour milling capacity is 19,900 cwts, which means Star of the West is the 17th largest miller in the United States.
Incident Description:
On December 21, 2018, the Times-Herald reported a dryer fire at a grain mill in Emmett, Michigan.
When firefighters arrived at around 8:00 a.m., they found dry beans burning in the grain dryer, which holds around 2,400 bushels. The fire had started around halfway up the pile. The worker who called 911 told reporters, “Flames were shooting out of there pretty good.”
The firefighters emptied the scorched beans from the dryer and applied water to those that were still smouldering
The Emmett Fire Department was assisted by crews from Mussey and Memphis Fire Departments.
No injuries were reported.
