The District Relief Operations Command reported that authorities received the alert at 5:00 a.m. and the fire was under control by 10:00 a.m. The fire was extinguished by 34 firefighters from Beja, Alvito, Ferreira do Alentejo and Serpa, with help from 13 vehicles.
The cooperative’s president confirmed that the flames ignited in a grain dryer containing dozens of tons of sunflower. He said that a short circuit must have occurred in one of the dryer engines over the course of the night, as it had been working normally.
