Description of Filter House Fire:
On June 11, 2018 Fremont News Messenger reported a filter house fire at battery manufacturer Crown Battery, in Fremont, Ohio. Fire crews were called to the factory at 5:50am on Monday 11 June and the blaze was extinguished within an hour and fifteen minutes. Crown Battery’s owner said the fire appeared to have been caused by sparks from the casting department. Dust and fumes from the casting department travel through air ducts to the filter house, and sparks could have ignited combustible materials such as particulate matter or the filter elements themselves.
The Fremont Fire Lieutenant said the operation to extinguish the fire went smoothly and that the fire was contained to the filter house. The blaze is estimated to have caused at least $5000 in damage, with additional losses due to lost production. All staff were evacuated safely and there were no injuries.
The Assistant Fire Chief said they had been called to Crown Battery before for fires at the filter house, but not in recent years. No further information could be found about these incidents. In June last year 13abc reported that Crown Battery was expanding and had added over a hundred employees in the last two years.
