According to the company’s website, the Xcel Energy French Island plant in La Crosse, Wisconsin, was built in the 1940s as a coal-fired generating facility and converted in 1972 to burn oil. In the early 1980s, the company converted Unit 2 to a fluidized bed boiler to burn waste wood. Today, the plant’s two generating units burn wood waste, railroad ties and processed municipal solid waste.
Incident Description:
On August 26, 2020, the La Crosse Tribune reported a fire at an energy plant in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The fire department responded at 5:01 p.m. On arrival, they found smoke coming from the structure and located the fire in the dust collector and adjoining ducts. The fire was successfully extinguished.
No injuries were reported. The dust collector sustained minor smoke and fire damage.
