Company Description:
According to its website, Port Harcourt Flour Mills is a combined grain terminal and flour mill in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The Rivers State and the Bayelsa State governments jointly own the facility, which was taken over by the Chagoury Group in 1976. It produces 650 metric tons of wheat flour, wheat bran, noodle flour and semolina per day. The company’s products are sold throughout Nigeria and its principal customers are direct users, i.e. bakers, biscuit factories, fish, poultry and livestock farmers.
Incident Description:
On October 4, 2020, Nairametrics reported an explosion at a flour mill in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
The Nigerian Ports Authority and Rivers State Fire Service had a hard time putting out the resulting fire, which occurred after the 11:00 a.m. explosion.
Some area residents stated that the flour mills facility had been non-functional for over a year while others stated that the incident had occurred during grain processing, while barley was being transferred into storage tanks.
Although the facility was damaged and the blast shook the foundation of homes and businesses, no injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.
