Incident Description:
On September 20, 2018, KOAM TV reported a dust explosion and fire at a recycling plant in Joplin, Missouri. Firefighters arrived shortly before 10:00 p.m. after local residents called 911 to report multiple explosions that could be heard across town. While the police closed nearby roads, firefighters took a defensive approach to the fire due to the presence of hazardous materials inside the plant.
Although the source has not yet been identified, Joplin Deputy Fire Chief said that the explosions could have been caused by large barrels of aluminum powder.
Firefighters remained on the scene until the following day to monitor and extinguish residual smouldering material, but according to news resource Joplin News First, the fire rekindled at 5:00 a.m. on September 2018, requiring crews to return.
One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion and released. The value of all damaged property is unknown.
