Incident Description:
On May 2, 2019, WJTV reported a dust explosion at a toll manufacturing facility in Brookhaven, Mississippi.
The Brookhaven Fire Department arrived shortly after 8:30 a.m. in response to a call about a silo fire, but determined that a dust explosion had occurred. The plant ground up corn cob, so they believed that this material triggered the incident.
“It’s been such a fine powder apparently so we don’t really know the exact cause but apparently it got a spark and exploded,” a representative said.
The Brookhaven police department command staff used a drone to get an overview of the silo and ensure that firefighters on the scene could safely approach. An FLIR camera showed which areas of the silo were still emitting heat.
The Brookhaven Fire Department, MEMA, Lincoln County EMA and the State’s Environmental Quality department remained on the scene as a precaution, to ensure that nothing left the site to contaminate anything else.
No one was injured in the explosion.
