Description of Sawdust Fire:
The Dale Jackson Career Center was evacuated on May 16, 2018, due to a fire in a dust collection system. The fire began when a table saw operated by students kicked embers into the dust collector. The students attempted to put out the fire using a fire extinguisher but the extinguishant only reached the table saw, not the tanks.
Units from two different departments were called to the scene but the firefighters were concerned that opening that tanks could cause a dust explosion and so they vented the sawdust system to allow smoke to dissipate. This led to a longer timeline for extinguishing the fire but a safer experience for the firefighters, none of who were injured during the incident.
