Incident Description:
On May 19, 2023, Yahoo News reported a fire at a public high school in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.
According to the Fleetwood Fire Company Chief, the fire was possibly caused by sparks generated in the wood and metal shop and drawn into the dust collection system. The sparks ignited the wood dust, leading to the flames spreading to the bag collection system.
Fleetwood, Walnuttown, Blandon, and Kutztown crews responded promptly to the incident, arriving at approximately 1:30 p.m.
In order to access the flames, the operation involved dismantling the duct work. As a precautionary measure, all students were evacuated from the school premises, and eight rooms were ventilated to ensure safety.
The fire remained contained within the duct work, and firefighters successfully extinguished the flames by approximately 2:25 p.m., preventing further damage or spread of the fire.
No injuries were reported.
