Incident Description:
On November 17, 2022, ET Today reported a dust explosion at a bicycle parts manufacturer in Fuxing Township, Changhua County, Taiwan.
The explosion, which apparently occurred near the dust collection area, seriously injured three employees. One man suffered from second to third degree burns on around 80% of his body. His vital signs were unstable and he was sent to the intensive care unit for burns. A second worker suffered second to third degree burns on about 40% of his body while a third experienced second degree burns on his face and upper arm. All three were hospitalized.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the area of the factory affected by the explosion was about two square metres, and firefighters detected no high temperature phenomenon using thermal imaging cameras.
According to this government report, the concentration of aluminum dust in the dust collection bag reached the explosion range. Sparks generated when an iron pipe was being ground were sucked into the aluminum dust cloud, causing the explosion.
