Description of Coal Fire in Newburg, Maryland:
As reported by WUSA9, a fire began at the GenOn Coal Power Plant on April 18, 2018. Approximately 19 firefighters responded to the call at around 2:30 am when an employee noticed the fire in an underground coal hopper train car. A representative for the company said that the train cars move coal underground to conveyor belts which then lift the coal to above ground silos.
In this case, the fire was quite small however it took over three hours to extinguish because firefighters had a hard time accessing the precise location of the fire.
Investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire at this time.
No employees or firefighters were injured during the incident at the southern Charles County plant.
