Company Description:
According to its website, Vanino Port is a port on the Strait of Tartary in Vanino, Russia. With a volume of between 15 million tons and 20 million tons of coal handled per year, it is the second largest coal port in Russia. Mechel, one of Russia’s largest coal producers, built its own terminal in Vanino to serve Asian markets. The port was opened in 2008 and has shipped more than 150 million tons of coal since it commenced operations.
According to the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK), Vanino Port is one of the most technologically advanced terminals. Various dust suppression systems are deployed at the coal depot, systems are in place to wash the transshipped coal, and industrial vacuum machines clean the coal port.
Incident Description:
On October 14, 2021, Maritime Executive reported a coal terminal fire at a port in Vanino, Russia.
According to reports from the Administration of the Vaninsky district, a fire broke out on the terminal coal conveyors on October 11. Although a number of loading belts were heavily damaged, the fire was contained to the belts and did not spread to the coal terminal or storage.
As a result of the fire, the terminal operator, the Siberian Coal Energy Company (SUEK) notified customers that force majeure had been declared. There was no indication of when operations might resume.
No injuries were reported.
