Incident Description:
On March 15, 2023, Revista Oeste reported a series of explosions in five coal mines in Sutatausa, Colombia.
The explosion took place on the night of March 14. Around 30 miners were in the tunnels at the time of the explosions. The cause was believed to be a gas accumulation ignited by a worker’s pickaxe, which also set off coal dust. The five mines were connected to each other, so there was a chain reaction.
The trapped miners were at a depth of 900 metres, making it difficult for more than 100 rescuers working with pickaxes to find them. After thirty hours, it was determined that the death toll was actually 21.
