According to its Wikipedia entry, Raichur Thermal Power Station is a coal-fired electric power station located in the Raichur district of the state of Karnataka, India. Operated by the Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, it was the first thermal power plant to be set up in the state and accounts for about 40% of the total electricity generated in Karnataka. The station has been the subject of some controversy because it generates about 1.5 million tons of fly ash annually, which causes environmental problems.
Incident Description:
On March 27, 2019, the Deccan Herald reported a fire at a power station in Raichur, India.
The fire, which broke out at CHP-1 conveyor belt in the power station’s coal section, destroyed a 500-meter belt and its cables and motors. Firefighters were able to extinguish it with assistance from employees.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Previous Incidents:
On April 9, 2010, The Hindu reported that power generation at the Raichur Thermal Power Station was affected after the conveyor belt snapped in a recent fire. Five years later, on May 24, 2015, The Hindu reported another fire at the station. The Central Industrial Security Force and fire-fighting personnel stationed at the power station succeeded in preventing the flames from expanding to other units.
