According to its website, Engro Powergen Thar Limited is a coal-fired power plant in Thar, Pakistan. Construction began on the 660MW power plant in April 2016. It was to begin generating 660MW of power by December 2018, but the coal power plant started pumping electricity generated by domestic coal into the national grid in March 2019, starting with 330MW.
Incident Description:
On March 2, 2022, Dawn reported an explosion at a coal-fired power plant in Thar, Pakistan.
Management issued a statement confirming that the explosion occurred at 5:00 p.m. in the coal conveyor unit of the plant’s 330MW unit 1. Initial reports showed that the explosion occurred in the conveyor belt systems that fed coal into the plant.
The power plant was under scheduled outage where one of the units was already shut down for maintenance whereas the other was operational. During the investigation into the incident, the company shut down the operational unit for safety reasons.
Five people were injured in the explosion, which was captured on video. The video can be seen in this LinkedIn post.
Police and the district administration arrived on site after the incident, but the fire had been put out by that point. The incident is under investigation.
